Amitabha (Sanskrit: "Infinite Light") is the most anicent Buddha among the Five Dhyani Buddhas. He said to reside in the Sukhavati heaven in peaceful meditation. Amitabha symbolizes mercy and wisdom.

He is associated with the third skandha that of perception. Amitabha's hands are in a meditation mudra. His symbol is the lotus, representing gentleness and purity. Tantric meditation on Amitabha is an antidote to desire.

He is sometimes pictured in between the bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta. He exhibits samadhi mudra with his two palms folded face up one on top of the other lying on his lap, sometimes holding a patra (pot) on the same posture. He has a lotus as his sign. When represented on the stupa, he always faces the west.
